OUR ASSOCIATION

The only worldwide association of conference interpreters, AIIC pursues the following goals:

Wherefore a professional association?

The professional interpreter carries a great responsibility when performing his or her duties - a misunderstanding, a wrong word or inflexion in the voice could cause embarrassment or even perhaps lead to an international incident!

Governments, industry and commerce call for the highest degree of accuracy and reliability from interpreters and to set and maintain these standards as a professional body - AIIC was formed in 1953. Today it has some 2500 members in over 80 countries.

It was following the Nuremberg trials and the formation of the United Nations, both of which demonstrated the importance of simultaneous interpretation, that interpreters working at that time recognized the need for an international organization. So AIIC was born.

The only truly international body of its kind, AIIC has the full recognition of the European Union, NATO, Interpol, World Bank, United Nations and most other major international organizations.

The professional interpreter does much more than change a speech or conversation from one language into another. He or she must understand what is being said - not always easy with ever changing technical and business jargon - and be well versed in the different cultures and accents. The latter applies particularly to English, which, accepted as the international business language, is spoken in a great many accents and dialects by people from all over the world.

All members of AIIC have achieved the very highest professional standards in satisfying an examining body of their fluency in several languages and, equally important, of having a deep knowledge and understanding of their culture. Before a member is accepted into the AIIC, he or she must be sponsored by at least five existing members.

Through its international representation, the Association can claim to have members who are able to provide interpretation for most languages in use today.
