The free-lance interpreters, members and non-members of AIIC, who work in European Union sector, meeting in Brussels on 22nd September 1998 (812 colleagues present or represented) · having heard the report presented by the Negotiating Delegation; · considering that two months after the rulings of the Court of First Instance, no date for inter-institutional consultation has been proposed by the Commission and that therefore there are no grounds to believe that there is a real will to find an unassailable legal base for subjecting freelance interpreters to Community tax. · considering furthermore that the Call for expressions of interest initiated by the Commission on behalf of the EU Institutions, constitutes a repudiation of the Negotiating Delegation and of the thirty years of successive agreements signed by both parties: Protest against the unilateral suspension of Art 8a of the AIIC-EU Convention, without consultation under the terms of Art. 19 of said Convention. Confirm their support for the principle of equal treatment between all freelance interpreters, and particularly for the application of Community tax to freelance interpreters. Emphasise the importance that they attach to defence of their interests during re-negotiation of the Convention by the AIIC-EU Delegation, which they have elected to represent them. Reaffirm their full and entire confidence in their Delegation, which represents all the interpreters accredited by the Institutions. Decide to refuse or to cancel contracts for the Commission and the European Court of Justice during the weeks of 5th-9th and 19th-23rd October 1998, unless an inter-institutional consultation takes place before those dates. Instruct the Delegation to initiate talks with staff colleagues, the trades unions and professional organisations, with a view to filing an official strike warning and the organisation of lightning stoppages. Likewise instruct the Negotiating Delegation to reconvene the Sectoral meeting at the latest on the evening of the day on which the Consultation meeting has taken place, in order to assess the situation and decide on the next step.
