James Nolan, interpreter and lawyer, has served as Deputy Director of the Interpretation, Meetings & Publishing Division of the United Nations; UN Senior Interpreter; & Head of Linguistic & Conference Services of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. He has taught simultaneous interpretation at the New York University School of Continuing & Professional Studies and Marymount Manhattan College, New York.
Program
The working languages will be English (A or B), Spanish (B or C) and French (B or C). Emphasis will be on practice and "booth work" (without booths). Participants will take turns interpreting, then discuss difficulties, take notes, offer suggestions, solutions, etc. Recordings and texts for speeches studied and classroom and homework exercises will be provided.
Participants may bring speeches they have found difficult or challenging to interpret.
Instructor will make brief presentations on techniques and facilitate round-table discussions.
Speeches will be from the UN and other settings. Topics covered will include:
- Speaking
- Preparation / Anticipating the speaker
- Complex syntax / compression
- Word-order / clusters
- General adverbial clauses
- Untranslatability
- Figures of speech
- Argumentation
- Diction / Register
- Formal style
- Quotations & allusions

The tuition fee per participant is: two millions eight hundred thousand Bolivares (VEB 2'800'000.-), to be deposited at time of enrollment.
For foreign professionals, the cost of the seminar is USD 2'000.-, which includes cost of participation in the seminar, airport transfers to and from Simón Bolívar international airport and lodging at Hotel Altamira Suites, single room with breakfast. The Altamira Suites is located 100 meters from the conference venue facilities, in one of the safest shopping/entertainment areas of Caracas.
