An internal/external competition is open to fill this vacancy.
In accordance with paragraph 10 of Annex H of the Staff Regulations, applications may be submitted by established Centre officials or officials recruited under fixed-term contract who will have completed their period of probation by the closing date. An official who has not completed his/her probationary period or whose fixed-term contract is linked to a specific training project of a fixed-term duration of one year or more may participate in this competition as an external candidate.
If an external candidate is selected, he/she will be offered a fixed-term contract of one year, which may be renewed. The conditions of employment relating to such contracts are described briefly in Appendix I to the present notice.
Candidatures of both men and women are equally welcome for this position.
INTRODUCTION
Within the Centre, the Translation, Interpretation, Editing and Reporting (TIER) Section is responsible for providing the full range of language services required to promote, implement and report on the Centre’s programme. This responsibility covers translation, interpretation and editing as required, primarily for its training and publications activities.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Reporting to the Manager of the Public Relations and Training Support Service and under the supervision of the Coordinator of the TIER Section, the incumbent will have the following main responsibilities:

Translate into Spanish from English and French, and occasionally from other working languages of the Centre, a wide range of complex documents on economic, social, legal and technical subjects He/she may be called upon to translate documents with very short deadlines (e.g. preparation of documents for the Board of the Centre).
- Select external translators into Spanish to entrust with translations that cannot be undertaken in-house; follow the proper procedure for doing so; revise their translations when necessary; approve payment of their fees.
- Edit documents, publications and manuals written by other services; proof-read final versions of documents and publications; work in conjunction with the Multimedia Design and Production unit to guarantee the linguistic excellence of the Centre’s publications.
- Be responsible for translating and/or revising documents with very short deadlines before and during Board of the Centre sessions.
- Compile and maintain lists of terminology in subjects of interest to the Centre.
- Other tasks related to his/her functions.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Education: Relevant university or university-level translation school degree in languages, literature, arts, law, politics, economics or social sciences.
Languages: Spanish mother tongue; excellent knowledge of English and French. Knowledge of other languages (e.g. Italian) would be an advantage.
Experience: Minimum five years’ experience as a translator, preferably for international organizations or at international level. Ability to produce rapid, accurate, stylistically appropriate and finished translations, and occasionally to revise translations, on a wide variety of subjects such as human resources training, international cooperation, economic and social development, and labour relations. Working experience as an editor with publishing houses would be an asset.

Technical and other qualifications
- Experience of computer word-processing.
- Commitment and willingness to work to very short deadlines (even outside normal hours) during peak periods; strong sense of responsibility and initiative in a wide range of work situations.
WRITTEN EXAMINATION AND INTERVIEW
Applicants may be required to sit a written examination and to be interviewed.

N.B. Depending on his/her qualifications and experience, the candidate may be initially recruited at a grade lower than that of the position.
