Genesis of the Japan Association for Interpretation Studies (JAIS)

In the late 1980’s some felt that it was imperative for Japanese interpreters to participate in a new area of research – interpretation studies - because the profession by its very nature is global. I also felt it to be our humble duty to make a contribution to bringing Japanese language and culture to the notice of the rest of the world, thus making interpreting studies more comprehensive.

At least the weather had improved as I crossed the channel at a very early hour in order to do my duty for AIIC. The museum was the venue for a workshop and is a partner, together with the universities of Reading and Southampton, in a project called Languages at War.
